BariMatera5G is the project with which TIM, Fastweb and Huawei have jointly won the tender of the MISE for the experimentation of the new 5G technology in both cities.

Thanks to an investment of over 60 million euros over 4 years and the involvement of 52 partners of excellence, Bari and Matera will be among the first “5G cities” in Europe in which innovative services will be tested in areas such as health, industry 4.0, tourism, culture, automotive and public safety.

The 5G network development plan for Bari and Matera aims to reach 75% of the population of the urban areas of the two cities by the end of 2018 and the full coverage by the end of 2019. During 2019, new elements (Small Cell) will also be introduced with the aim of providing an increase in capacity and coverage in those areas that in the future will be affected by hot spots traffic.

In parallel with infrastructure development, the project aims to develop innovative services, which exploit the capacity of 5G, in more than 70 use scenarios involving 10 application areas.

  • Analysis and study of ICT tools for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and 3D modeling applied to the enhancement of cultural heritage.
  • Analysis and comparison of software/hardware equipment for remote maintenance of industrial machinery through Augmented Reality.
  • Development of a web-app for the visualization of spherical photos and architectural renderings in desktop and VR mode.
